A serviceability investigation of dowel-type timber connections featuring single softwood dowels

Dowel-type connections are common in timber engineering, but current design codes largely based on empiricism and oversimplified. This inhibits the optimised use of connections, which is essential for economically efficient structures. study investigates 3D computational modelling to predict slip modulus (a key measure stiffness) single double shear, dowel-type featuring a softwood dowel. Initial was conducted parallel- perpendicular-to-grain establish suitable mesh size validate model against experimental work. The angled orientations then investigated, relationship given no consideration codes. results show that greatly overestimate both shear involving dowels. In comparison, models this more than twice as accurate at predicting modulus. Furthermore, shown vary sinusoidally grain-to-grain angle changes between parallel perpendicular orientations. Differences values can be attributed uncertainty mechanical properties experiments, assumption uniform each principal direction models, inherent variability affects results.
